Wench Tour (spring ’09) #7

On Sunday afternoon, Keehr and I rolled to Jimmy Woo’s Pagoda in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.  We were there to watch a few bands play music all afternoon for a “homeless veterans benefit.”  It was pretty sweet.  Every band was damn good.  One in particular, “Thick Shoe,” kicked our butts.

Thick Shoe is a five piece band (two guitars, bass, drums and keys) that plays live once, maybe twice a year.  Despite the fact that they don’t play together hardly ever, holy crap they were killer.  The grooves were tight, the vocals were impressive and overall they were very entertaining.  Keehr and I had a blast.

I met Terry, bass player for Thick Shoe, before their set.  He was a really laid back guy .  He kicked total ass when he stepped on stage, as did the whole band.  Damn.  Terry didn’t sing for the first four or five songs, so after about fifteen or twenty minutes I didn’t expect him to use the vocal mic in front of him at all.  When he randomly stepped up to the mic to announce an upcoming show at the venue, he dropped us.  On April 24th, “Tommy Two Tone” will be playing live in Eau Claire at that bar.  He is your typical REALLY NICE WISCONSIN guy, and when he talked on the microphone, it was very apparent that Keehr and I were far, far from home.  For whatever reason, Keehr and I doubled over in laughter at the thought of “Tommy Two Tone” playing in that place.  Honestly, I want to see that show.  Damn.

Wench Tour (spring ’09) #6

This is our video from Saturday. I didn’t get a chance to get on-line yesterday at all, and to be honest, I think I started going through internet withdrawals. Thus, now that I’m back in the “world wide net” zone, I’m having a grand time.

Keehr and I rocked hard for day 2 of the NACA conference. As always, the chaos never ends. (Click on the picture below for the video.)

Day 1 of the NACA conference was a blast.  Picture John and Josh, surrounded by college kids who love music and aren’t afraid to talk to strange men in bands.  Needless to say, we talked ourselves hoarse.

I did my best to keep the camera on and get some footage.  Note our AMAZING backdrop for our booth.  We’re professionals.  Hellz yes.

Wench Tour (spring ’09) #3

Hey all! We had a freakin blast in Brainerd, of course. The crazies came out in full force and we did our best to disturb the peace. I think that we might have accomplished that. Yay CIA!

Minnesota Bound

Keehr and I played an acoustic duet show last night in Billings. We got a text from A.J. around 7:45pm that said, “I hate you guys. Hope you play like shit.” Well A.J., you’ll be glad to hear that we didn’t disappoint you! We indeed played poorly, and the few people that showed up had no fun.

Of course, I’m full of it. We rocked, and a lot of peeps came out. Below is a pic to prove it.

I’d better keep this short. Keehr and I are sitting in an Arby’s in Dickinson, North Dakota. We just had a bite of lunch and I’m trying to get the podcast up and running. This week was a pretty cool adventure. We’re gonna try to do a few more like this. Rock on.

Time to hit the road. Minnesota awaits.

Missoula Pre-Funk Pics

My camera is still being fixed somewhere in California.  Oh, the joys of having a Panasonic Lumix camera still under warranty.  I HOPE to use it again sometime this year.  Hey, if anyone from Panasonic’s repair facility in “Somewhere, California” reads my blog, could you hurry it the frak up already?  Thank you.

In other news, our friend Waters, aka-”Bruiser” e-mailed me a few pics from Friday’s pre-funk in Missoula.  Keehr and I rolled into the Bayern Tap Room for a cold one with a few die hard fans that came to meet us before the show.  These are the only pics I’ve seen, so for the rest of you who came out and brought your cameras, please e-mail them to me (john@clintonsband.com) and I’ll post them as I get them.

Word to your mother.

Flooded Fargo

If you guys haven’t been following the news about the Red River getting higher and higher in Fargo, here’s the link.

Josh and I are scheduled to stop in Fargo on Tuesday to have dinner with Bung at Hooters.  Who knows Hooters will be underwater by then.  Sheesh. My prayers are certainly with North Dakota right now.

Have You Ever Smoked Smarties?

Whatever happened to simply rolling the legs on your pants, or wearing neon colored headbands and wrist warmers? Sure, fads change, and I like to think I’m “with it” and “hip.” The truth is I’m just getting older and blinder to the ways of the world.  I have no doubt that by the time my bride and I have kids, by the time they are in elementary school I’ll be so oblivious to the world that I’ll have no clue what in the hell is “hip” anymore.

Case in point.  Did anyone know that kids these days find it cool to “smoke smarties”?  Yeah, Smarties, those little candies that we loved when we were kids.  It’s a new fad among kids to “smoke” them.

I googled this and found an article from The Wall Street Journal.  This article is only a week old, so this is fairly new stuff (at least that the media is noticing cuz kids have probably been doing this for years). Some 6th graders in California were doing this and got in trouble.  Unfreakinreal.

I’m not gonna lie, I’m for sure gonna try this. However, as my friend Scarlette Quille said, “what’s scarier, the fact that kids are doing this or the fact they can make a pretty good YouTube video and share it with other kids all over the net?  (Click on the picture below to watch the vid.  I’m most impressed when he blows “smoke” out his nose at the 3 minute mark.  UNREAL.)

Who Hates Twitter?

This video here is hands down one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.  For those of you who use Twitter, you know how it can be very obnoxious when people overuse/abuse it.  For instance, I used to follow the “Bozeman Police Reports” but they post about 20 new tweets every day.  It’s simply too much.

I guess my biggest complaint is when people post tweets about mundane stuff, like “I’m eating a turkey sandwich” or “I’m dancing in a candle lit room with the love of my life.”  Those things are just a bit too boring for me.

I try to be relevant, and rarely do I just tweet about food, unless of course it’s really amazing.  Even then, I TRY not to be THAT guy using Twitter.  ”Eating, thinking about eating again!”  Hell, that’s all I’d tweet all day if I let myself.  Even as I type this, I’m thinking about food.  Alas, I’m guilty as charged.  I’ll be in the kitchen if you need me.

Square Foot Gardening

Any gardeners out there?  Anyone with a green thumb?  Guys, it may sound cheesy, but I am just as excited to have a big, kick ass garden this summer as I am to have some sweet, kick ass shows while jammin’ with the fellas!  I couldn’t sleep last night, so I stayed up until 1am drawing up plans for my new garden.  It’s gonna consist of 4 raised beds measuring 4x12ft, and on the outside of the garden I’ll have raised flower beds.  In all, I’ll have just under 200sq.ft for growing food, and another 150sq.ft for growing flowers.  It should be BAD ASS.

One thing that lots of gardeners do is waste time by over planting, waste money with lots of stuff they don’t actually need, and lose their love for gardening because it becomes WORK.  If it aint fun, why bother?  Well, there’s a dude named Mel Bartholomew who wrote a book back in ’81 called “Square Foot Gardening“.  The whole premise of the book is to show how gardening should be efficient, fun, and cheap.  I’m 60 pages into the book and I’m sold on this method.  It’s sweet.

Mel isn’t a die hard gardener, but rather, he’s an engineer.  Thus, he’s always looking for faster, easier, more efficient ways to garden.  His method is awesome, but my favorite part of this book is the front cover.  Look at that comb over!  That’s a freakin’ EPIC comb over.  Good work Mel.
